Pretty Nerdy Warriors: Part 2 of our E3 coverage

Standard

Thought we were done talking about Hyrule Warriors? You were wrong.

On top of handing us a roster of mostly female playable characters, the outfits on these women are sensible and practical while still looking great. This is a big deal in the video game world which is tends to cast mostly males, and when we do get female characters, they’re often hyper sexualized and running around in skimpy armor that would be of no use in battle. Seeing properly battle-ready ladies is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Legend of Zelda has rarely had a problem with their sexualizing of female characters, but one can’t help but worry that it’s only right around the corner and with a collaboration we don’t really know what to expect. Imagine the relief when we got to see our ladies and their outfits.

HW1

Let’s talk about Impa first. We know her mostly as Zelda’s Sheikah mentor and protector. She has two major appearances in both Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword (as well as minor appearances in Link Between Worlds and as Impaz in Twilight Princess). In both OoT and SS she’s a fierce warrior and has helpful advice for Link. She’s always ready to go with armor, weapons, and a calm demeanor.

HW2

Let’s talk about our beloved Princess Queen Zelda next. (ed: as of yesterday, it was announced that Zelda would have ascended the throne come Hyrule Warriors and would in fact be Queen.)

HW3

Now, we’ve had the chance to see Zelda fight before in the Nintendo game Super Smash Bros. There she’s wearing an unaltered version of her usual gown that we see her appear in during Legend of Zelda. Everyone can probably agree fighting in a full length ball gown is at the very least impractical, if not just downright ridiculous.

Her updated look in Hyrule Warriors could have easily been boobalicous and sexy, but here we see that it’s not. It’s practical while still managing to look regal and pretty. The designers gave her the best of everything when they could have given her the worst.

HW4

And finally, everyone’s favorite imp and princess of the Twilight, Midna! The designers seem to be working under the old saying “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” with Midna’s look. The biggest difference here is that the wolf isn’t Link transformed but rather seems to be a beast summoned from the Twilight Realm to aid its princess. If we didn’t know better this could just be a screenshot of Midna from Twilight Princess for all she’s changed. She’s looking good and ready to join Link once again in the fray!
All these ladies are looking fine and ready for a fight. September’s gonna be a good month.
